PRESIDENT'S PAGE

Well the results of the committee
to select the site for the 11th Annual
Convention (1996) have been received.
It will be held at the Fort Worth
Multiplex Show in the Fort Worth/Dallas
area on September 27 - 29. In my
conversations with Dick DeVries and Lou
Kretovics I am confident we will have a
successful convention and hopefully it
will be well attended. So mark your
calendar and plan to attend to renew
your friendship with your fellow club
members and make new acquaintances.

In the past month I have attended
three coin shows and have had very
little success in obtaining any new
bar/rounds. I guess the price of silver
is so low that no older material is
coming to the market, hope some of you
have had better luck in getting that
elusive silver piece to add to your
collection .

I have not heard from Nancy on any
great gains in our membership so I guess
we still need to work and build up our
membership rolls, keep working and
asking others and you will be surprised
what may be the final result.

Once again, read about the upcoming
convention in other sections of the
Bugle and plan to attend.

See you at the SHOW.

If you receive this edition of the Bugle a little
later than usual, you can blame it on me! The
P.0, box was deluged with renewals in January and
I had well over 100 pieces of mail to respond to.
Your SASE really helps when you send in any type
of correspondence. Thanks to so many of you for
remembering .

In addition to a flood of mail, we had some
pretty big rainstorms here in the northwest. We
got to see some of the damage firsthand on a
quick trip to Oregon last weekend. Traffic was
backed up for miles in one area, due to a mud¬
slide. The whole side of a hill had come down
and covered 1-5 and Amtrak lines.

January also brought a big science fair project
and the flu bug, and in February there was a
basketball tournment and Chinese New Year's
dinner to prepare. It's the Year of the Rat,
and my husband is one!! No kidding!

So, it has been a busy couple of months. If
you are waiting for me to return a letter, please
be patient - there are still a couple of Xmas
cards I haven't written!

On to business - Lou Kretovics and Dick DeVries
have decided on this year's meeting place. We're
headed for the Dalls/Ft. Worth area at the end
of September. Thanks to Lou & Dick for all their
hard work. It takes a lot of letter writing and
phone calls to set this up every year and we
should really be planning ahead for 1997!

With this meeting site in mind, put on your
thinking caps and begin doing some research for
this year's club round . We'll announce the
design contest in the May Bugle.

In case anyone was wondering about that tall
tower going up in Las Vegas last fall, Linda
Spellman sent an article about it. The Strato¬
sphere is part of another big hotel complex, and
there will be a roller coaster atop the 1,149 ft.
tall tower. Is anyone game??

Take a look at all the classified ads in this
Bugle. Make some new friends and do some trad¬
ing. It's what the club is all about! Don't
forget to send in your free ad if you haven't
used it already, and consider placing an ad
once in a while. At 1 0<t per word, it's pretty
painless .

Wally Thomas #012 attended the F.U.N. show with
his wife Eda. He requested some 'Bugles' ahead
of time to take along, and reported back, "The
Bugles got to the F.U.N. show. One was taken
while I was putting them out. Hope you're
swamped with new members 1 "

President Jim Best #071 sent this photo of his
silver bar & round exhibit at F.U.N. He says
he generated some interest in the club with his
display.

Joe Arnold #017, Arnold Winfield #149, Edward R.
Dowell #283, and Eugene Daley #008 sent New Year
greetings! Eugene also reports that he is im¬
proving from a recent illness. He says, "with
my medication and diet, which I follow to a ' t '
both of my doctors are happy with my progress."
He adds, "I found all of my 'Silver Bugles' from
Vol. #1 to date and read them many times over."

Ralph Steffen #046 said, "Thanks again for an¬
other interesting year of good reading for the
silver art collector. I enjoyed all the issues
very much. Keep up the good work!"

Former member Larry Cannon #179 is one of our
club's best promoters. He writes, "I believe I
found an individual from Louisville KY who might
be interested in the club." Larry has brought
us several new members recently.

New member Helen Hubert #390 writes, "I received
my membership card and 'Silver Bugle' (which I
really enjoyed reading.) Thank you."

We're sorry to hear from Jerry Enlow #154 that
he does not plan to rejoin the club this year.

Keith Colby #122 had high praises for the IASAC,
saying, "As usual it is wonderful belonging to
this club and I am always grateful for the work
of all the officers, contributors to the 'Silver
Bugle' and those who regularly advertise."

Responding to the question about the mail de¬
livery problems with the November issue, Esther
Anaszewski #043 reported that she received her
January 'Bugle' in "perfect condition."

Jan Henke #302 wrote, "Received my 'Silver Bugle'
yesterday. There wasn't even a folded corner on
the outside cover this issue. Looked like it was
hand-delivered. Looks like the Postal Service
did a-okay this time around."

Steve Rood #007 has requested to be included in
the Round Robin mailings as President Emeritus.

Howard Sparks #053 sent the club a batch of old
'Limited Editions,' 'Silver Bar News' and some
old advertisements to add to our library collec¬
tion. Once catalogued, they'll be available on

Michael S. Turrini #350 had this comment, "What
a Pleasant Surprise! Opened and read my January
1996 'Silver Bugle' finding myself mentioned and
pictured on page 6. This does prove that some
do read the numismatic periodicals and that my
picture was not the 'ugly.' THANKS!"

Diane Honeyman #371 says, "I too would like to
add my congratulations to our New Numismatic
Ambassador, Michael S. Turrini. WOW, how does
he find the time to participate in so many or¬
ganizations?" She adds, "I got a good chuckle
out of the cartoon on page 7 (Jan. Bugle). I'm
sending a copy of a cartoon I've had for several
years. It came out during the research on
saccharin ... I hope you enjoy this cartoon as much
as I enjoyed the one in the Bugle."

FROM THE MAILBAG.

D.V. Bryant #367 ■

Recieved my January 1996 Silver Bugle and was inter¬
ested in the complaints of 11302, 9 022 and #069 as to the
condition of their copies when received. Having worked
for the Postal Service I can offer a little insight as to
how this can happen.

In almost every postal facility of any size there are
numerous belt driven conveyor systems. When these systems
become clogged the belt continues to try to move. Any
mail on the bottom of the mass continue trying to move
forward. Often articles go off the sides of the belts.

Some fall on the floor which exposes it to gondola
traffic, wire basket and foot travel. Some items actually
lodge under the belt and revolve round and round on the
rollers that drive the belt.

A cover of some sort for the article will provide
some protection but couldn't be 100Z fool proof. I, for
one would not object to an additional charge to cover the
cost of a wrapper.

Also, when someone in the postal service marks an item
"received in bad condition" you must know this does not
mean it was mailed in bad condition. Damage can occur any
where within the system in any facility. I enjoy the
Bugel. Keep up the good work.

Ed. Note.

The Bugle is mailed 1st. Class in hopes that it will
receive a little better treatment in the system. We just
slip in at one ounce. Any heavier paper or a cover would
double our postage costs, not counting the cost of the
wrapper and the extra printing cost and labor. Any input
would be welcome. Would an envelope or wrapper be worth
the expense? How many have really received bad copies
over the past 10 years?

At $10.00 we are the beet value in the Hobby. IASAC was
never intended to 'Make Money', just cover its expense.

THE SOLANO SILVER ROUND CLUB ( SSRC)
by- Jan Henke

The SSRC was founded in 1983 by the late
Ruben Lee 'Lucky* Williams, proclaimed 'King
of Silver Rounds'. Mr. Williams was murdered
in the robbery of his coin shop, Golden Hills
Coin Exchange in Vacaville, CA on Nov 1, 1986.

His alleged murderer was arrested in Alaska
on Aug 13, 1990. He was traced through transfer
of his children's school records and from prop¬
erty belonging to Mr. Williams found in a stor¬
age locker in Washington state rented in his
name. He was also wanted for questioning in a
dozen other coin shop robberies. This suspect
died in his Alaska jail cell on Oct 30, 1990
of a heart attack while awaiting extradition to
Montana for a similar coin shop robbery and dou¬
ble murder.

The Solano Silver Round Club almost folded at
this time because many of the local Members were
so severely shaken by 'Lucky's' untimely death.
Hut thanks to the efforts of the Club's current
President, Michael S. Turrini, who worked so
hard to make the SSRC survive as a tribute to
his dear friend, Ruben Lee 'Lucky' Williams.

The SSRC is unique in that we believe it is
the only Club in existence solely dedicated to
the 'Collecting Of Silver Rounds’. Though only
having 35 Members, they can boast of having
Members from 'Coast to Coast', as one Member
lives in New Jersey, and another lives in Hawaii

The SSRC also promotes the designing of silver
rounds. They just completed it's seven years ser¬
ies of medals commemorating the 50th Anniversary
of World War II, striking a medal for each year
starting with 1939 (1989) and ending with two
medals each for 1944 (1994) and 1945 (1995).

The Solano Silver Round Club meets the second
Thursday of each month, Mandarin Restaurant, in
Fairfield, CA at 6:00 P.M. For information you
may write: Solano Silver Round Club, P.0. Box
3518, Fairfield, CA 94533. Dues-$10 per year.

The SSRC's monthly newsletter is 'Silver Notes'

Doug Jennings, Carl Roggero,

Dan Meade, Lois Lampinen, D.J.
Smith, Chuck Luce, Lynnae Clark,

ulations to Dennis Lotspeich and William Burd who had their
names pulled out of the hat! D.J. Smith wrote that many
of his associates gave up on this puzzle, but you can see
a number of IASAC members had what it takes to solve it!

In fact, we had so many responses that we drew two names
this time. Dennis & William will receive a silver bar
donated by Michelle Burke and a silver Eagle donated by
John Wilson. Thanks to all & Good Luck with this new

We are Senior Citizens

We are senior citizens

We ’ve been around for years.
We haven ’t always looked like this,
we’ve shed a lot of tears.

Still we greet each morning

with such great anticipation.
But on those days we ’re fortified
with extra medication.

I carry in my little bag
a mint for halitosis.

Take some Pepto-Bismol

for my chronis acidosis
Watch my diet

to relieve arteriosclerosis.

With all my many problems
I’m developing neurosis.

I’m up and at’em every day,
inspite of my bursitis.

Take along my Rolaids

to alleviate my gastritis.

I don 't mind the fainting spells
the frequent palpatations,

I just wish I could get rid

of this damned constipation I
When I get up each morning,

I have such a long routine.

I Efferdent my bridgework,

I drop in my Visine,

Have a shot of vitamins,

adjust my hearing aid,

I use my Preparation H,

and then I’ve got it made.

We folks aren’t what we used to be.

We’re older, heaven knows.
Our fallen arches give us pain,
all veins are varicose,

All our joints are creaking,

and we all have indigestion,
But one thing we don’t have to do,
is practice contraception.
